Our Story

Our Story

We started in 1998 as Wholesale Solar, selling solar equipment directly to homeowners at fair prices — mostly off-gridders and do-it-yourselfers who couldn't get a straight answer (or a reasonable quote) anywhere else.

But somewhere along the way, we realized the name undersold what we actually did. Our customers weren't just buying panels at wholesale prices. They were calling us to size battery banks, sanity-check electrical diagrams, navigate their county's permitting office, and troubleshoot systems years after the sale. The wholesale price got people in the door; the expertise is why they stayed and sent their neighbors.

So in 2020 we became Unbound Solar — a name that says what our customers are really after. Not cheap parts. Independence. Unbound from the utility grid, unbound from one-size-fits-all installers, unbound from anyone else deciding how your power gets made.

The company has evolved since — a rebrand, new ownership, a new home base in Southern California — but the mission that made Wholesale Solar work in 1998 is the same one that drives Unbound Solar today: anyone can be energy-independent, wherever they choose to live, and they shouldn't have to do it alone.

Our Story

One Family, Two Trusted Brands

In November 2023, Unbound Solar joined Gigawatt, Inc., the Southern California company that also owns GoGreenSolar — a brand that, for years, was our competitor.

We think that's a good story, not an awkward one. Two companies spent decades independently proving the same idea — that homeowners can handle their own solar projects with the right equipment and real support — and now we do it as one team. Behind the scenes, Unbound Solar and GoGreenSolar customers are served by shared design, fulfillment, and support infrastructure, which means faster turnarounds and more consistent service for both.

Same mission since 1998, now with the backing and shared resources of the Gigawatt family — and a former rival turned teammate.

How We Work

Do It Your Way

In our nearly 30-year history, we've worked with thousands of customers who didn't want to settle when it came to their solar electric system. Some want specific equipment from certain manufacturers. Some defer entirely to our recommendations. Some act as their own project managers; others do everything themselves — and many land somewhere in between.

That's the point. You can hire a full-service turnkey provider, do it yourself from beginning to end, or Do It Your Way — taking on as much or as little of the project as you'd like. The more you take on, the lower your total cost and the faster your return on investment.

Lifetime Service Guarantee: for full-system purchases, we remain your solutions partner for the life of your ownership — troubleshooting issues, decoding manufacturer warranties, and connecting you with equipment providers long after your system is up and running.

New to all of this? Start with the Getting Started Guide — it walks you through the whole journey before you spend a dollar.

01

Vetted, not endless

We don’t carry everything — and that’s the point. We offer a hand-selected group of prosumer-grade equipment we’ve carefully vetted, backed by a large, active customer base that proves it holds up in the real world. Our engineers and support team bring 15+ years of evaluating how gear is built and how it actually performs — and that’s how we decide what earns a spot on our shortlist.

02

Customized electrical diagram support

Every packaged system includes a standard electrical diagram for permitting and inspection. Need it customized to your site? We offer that as an add-on service.

03

Permitting & interconnection guidance

Our team helps with permitting and interconnection and provides ongoing project-management support throughout — and after installation, you can reach your project manager or our support team at any point. See our permitting service.

04

Personalized installation insights

Installing yourself, hiring local contractors, or both — we answer your questions and can even help you vet and select contractors. Experts available Mon–Fri 6 AM–6 PM and Sat 8 AM–5 PM Pacific.

See What Your System Would Cost

Our story matters because of how it shows up in the work: nearly 30 years of experience means our technicians catch the things a generic quote misses — shading, roof angle and azimuth, and the fire/ridge setbacks your jurisdiction actually enforces, before you're stuck with a permit rejection. Start low-pressure: see what a complete kit costs, then talk to a real technician if it fits your budget. You're not doing this alone.
